'Tiger Mom' Writes New Controversial Book

Posted: Updated:

The woman who became known as "Tiger Mom" in 2011 because of a controversial book is back in the headlines.

In 2011, Amy Chua explored the idea that Chinese mothers make better parents in her book "The Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mom."

She wrote a new parenting guide called "The Triple Package."

The book was co-written by her husband Jed Rubenfeld who is Jewish. In it, the couple names what they consider eight superior cultures that make better parents than the rest.

According to Chua, they include Chinese, Jewish, Indian, Iranian, Lebanese-American, Nigerians, Cuban exile and Mormon.

Chua cites three features that guarantee these cultures' success over others: superiority complex, insecurity and impulse control.

According to Chua and Rubenfeld, most successful cultures believe that they are exceptional. However, the members often feel insecure and want to prove themselves. Finally, according to the duo, successful cultures control the urge to always live in the moment.

She adds that these groups do better in America, as measured by income, job status and test scores. Chua is a law professor at Yale.
