WINCHESTER, Va. - The Winchester Police Department says a K-9 officer who was hurt when he fell through a ceiling inside a home Friday night will need surgery. The department is thanking the community for rallying around Kota, who is scheduled to undergo surgery Monday.

On Friday night, officers were called to home on Franklin Street just after two people were seen walking through the backyard, and flashing lights were spotted inside the house.  Officers knew the owner of the house wasn’t home because he had been arrested earlier in the week.

Officers found a door to the house open, Kota and his officer handler were called to the scene to help. While inside, Kota fell through the ceiling to the first floor of the house, breaking his leg in the fall.

Officers say even after the fall, Kota continued to help officers in their search for the suspect.

Since that day, the Winchester Police Department says they have received overwhelming support from communities both near and far wanting to help with Kota’s  recovery.

If you would like to donate to help pay for Kota’s treatment, you may mail a check to:

Winchester/Frederick County Law Enforcement Foundation
231 East Piccadilly Street
Winchester, VA 22601

Please indicate on the check that it’s for Kota.

Or call: (540) 545-4700

Members of the Winchester Police Department say they will do whatever it takes to make sure that Kota and his officer handler can return to duty together as quickly as possible.
