Woman charged with neglect after cold, late-night trip
A woman was charged with child neglect after she took a 2-year-old on a cold, late-night trip.
The temperature had dipped to about 39 degrees in the early morning hours on Tuesday when Volusia County Sheriff's deputies responded to a report of an unknown, shivering young child on the back porch of a home near Daytona Beach.
The resident had no idea who the 2-year-old was, and neither the barefoot boy nor the woman with him responded to the surprised resident's questions. When deputies arrived they learned that the woman was extremely inebriated and didn't know where she was or the name of the young boy with her.
But deputies were able to track down the child's family members who said that Candace Long, 28, had been asked by the child's father to watch the boy. Long's cold trip with the boy to a stranger's porch earned her an arrest for child neglect. The boy was returned to family members.
Deputies responded to a home on Valley Drive at 1:25 a.m. to check on an unknown adult and young child who were sitting on the resident's screened-in porch. They found Long passed out and holding the child, who was only dressed in wet shorts and a T-shirt.
When Long woke up, she was incoherent and muttering that she was drunk because it was her birthday. Deputies later learned that Long and the child had come from a house about two blocks away where the boy's father had asked Long to watch the child while he ran errands.
Family members told deputies that Long didn't have permission to leave the house with the boy. Deputies arrested Long and booked her into the Volusia County Branch Jail in Daytona Beach.
