NJ Hockey Player Breaks Neck In Game

Posted: Updated:
Monroe, New Jersey (My9NJ) - Over the weekend, Monroe hockey player, Michael Nichols, suffered a broken neck during a game against Mount Vernon.

Nichols underwent surgery Sunday and is currently in stable condition.

The incident occurred during the game when Nichols was going hard for a loose puck close to the opposing teams net. As he was attempting to get the puck and shoot it, he was checked by a player from Mount Vernon and Nichols went head first into the board causing him to break his neck.

People on Twitter are going ballistic in the wake of this unfortunate incident. The hashtag #PrayForMikey was created for people to offer well-wishes to Nichols, his friends and his family. Tweets are even coming in from USA Hockey, NJ Hockey and professional hockey and baseball players who are offering their sincerity for a full recovery.

At this time the family has asked for privacy, a wish that has been granted by both team and school officials.

On Wednesday there will be a benefit game between Brick Township and Point Pleasant at the Ocean ice Palace in Brick, New Jersey. The game starts at 3:45 and half of the proceeds with go to help Nichols recovery.

Should New Jersey towns get into the mortgage business? Two long-time Irvington New Jersey residents, Mary Whetstone and Yves Louis, say that the mortgage crisis in town has gotten out of control and something has to be done. “Every block there’s one or two or three, foreclosures on it. And if it keeps on like this, every house is going to be foreclosed,” Whetstone said.
