APD terminates supervisor charged with DUI

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

An Atlanta police supervisor has been fired after being charged with drinking under the influence.

Early on New Year's Day, Atlanta Police Lt. Maurice Dodd allegedly struck a water hydrant with his personal vehicle on Piedmont at Farr roads in Buckhead early New Year's Day. In Dodd's car, police said they found two large open containers of beer. Authorities said that Dodd's speech was allegedly slurred and he had strong odor of alcohol.

Dodd then refused to submit to an alcohol test, prompting his termination.

"Where reasonable suspicion exists, the employee must submit to an alcohol or drug test and the lieutenant refused to do that," said APD Deputy Chief Erika Shields.  "If we are going to go out there and have the authority to take people in custody and use lethal force, the standard has to be higher on us."

Dodd wasn't the only APD employee accused of DUI in December. Shields said one officer only lasted 24 hours before he got into a crash.

"He went through the entire police academy and was sworn in as a new officer on a Friday, and before he had even had a chance to patrol, he went out on the next Saturday and he got a DUI," Shields said.  "It's very discouraging to have invested all this time and money quite frankly into this individual and get nothing in return.

All total, the APD had three DUI arrests of employees in December.  A third case took place while an officer was vacationing in California. That officer is on paid leave pending an investigation of his case.
