Autistic boy fell asleep on school bus, taken to wrong school

Posted: Updated:

DORCHESTER, Mass. ( -- An 11-year-old autistic boy from Dorchester reportedly fell asleep on a school bus Thursday morning, missing his stop at the Joseph Lee School and neither the driver nor monitor noticed.

The boy finally got off at Beethoven Elementary in West Roxbury and staff there noticed he didn't belong. They called his school and arranged for him to be bussed there. That's when his parents, Harold and Jennifer Benders, were notified. They say they're upset over the incident and want to know how it happened.

"I was frightened, I was angry and I was confused," Jennifer Benders said.

A spokesman from Boston Public Schools released a statement reading in-part, "Standard protocol calls for bus drivers and monitors to check the bus after each trip to make sure there are no sleeping children aboard."

The school department is now investigating to see if that protocol was followed. The driver and monitor are suspended with pay while that investigation is underway.
