Flood Concerns Have Bucks County Emergency Officials On Standby

Posted: Updated:
BUCKS COUNTY, Pa. -

Bucks County is just one of the local areas where frozen ice left over from this week's frigid weather is now beginning to melt.

All eyes are on the ice jam a stretch of the Delaware River that separates Trenton, NJ and Yardley Pennsylvania remains locked and flooded by chunks of ice and frozen snow.

The ice from the river has spilled onto the street. River Road near East Ferry in Lower Makefield Township remains shut down.

Tim Glen says it's an unusual site that he wanted to share with his 5-year-old daughter.

"It's nothing like I've ever seen before," Glenn said. "I thought it would be cool to show her something like this because it's kind of a once in a lifetime thing you don't see it too often."

Earlier in the day Coast Guard crews worked to chop up the frozen waters, which Police Chief Ken Coluzzi hopes will prevent additional flooding.

"I believe the coastguard breaking up the ice would help give some room For our ice when it starts to thaw to move freely and not build up," Coluzzi said.

Chief Coluzzi says the forecasted freezing rain set to move in overnight is not going to help the situation. While he doesn't think homes are threatened, the speed of the thaw out could determine whether or not we see a surge of water rush onto these roads in the coming days.

In the meantime, onlookers are rushing to the area to capture this rare event. That's ok, but Police are asking people to stay far away from the water.

"Don't get too close and don't ever try to walk or stand on top of the ice," Colluzi said.
