Pray For Mikey

Posted: Updated:
Brick, New Jersey (MY9NJ) - High School Senior, Michael Nichols, is still in recovery after breaking his neck on Saturday during a hockey game.

A charity game between Brick and Point Pleasant High Schools was set up on Wednesday where the stamp of hockey brotherhood was imprinted on the Ocean Ice Palace rink.

A moment of silence was given for Mikey before the game started. Brick hockey co-captain David Kearns, described the emotional game.

“Both teams met in the middle and we had a nice prayer for him and I think we’re gonna be doing that a lot more often with both teams before games, praying and keeping everyone safe before a game,” he said.

During the game, all players wore a purple and yellow number 23 on their helmets in honor of Mikey and his recovery. Point Pleasant Boro Hockey Coach, Alex DePalma, discussed their significance.

“The helmet stickers we had made over night and all the proceeds will go to the family, prayers and whatever we can raise for the boy is the bigger picture even though there’s a hockey game being played,” he said.

Brick won the game 6-3. Ocean Ice Palace took in donations from patrons and they gave half of the box office ticket sales to the family, raising nearly $2,000.

Eric LeGrand, the Rutgers football player who was paralyzed during a game plans to meet with Mikey sometime next week

People are encouraged to send their well-wishes to Mikey and his family by using hashtag, #PrayForMikey.
