Two women volunteer to be homeless for a week

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Imagine leaving your family, children and the comforts of your home for an entire week. Well, that's what two young women did during the week of Christmas.

Erica Thomas and her friend Tamarre Torchon volunteered to be homeless to raise awareness about the growing number of people who end up homeless and on the streets because they've aged out of the foster care system.

Thomas aged out of the foster system, herself, but she was able to transition straight into college from her foster home.

According to statistics, about 20,000 children "age out of the foster system, every year, and around forty percent of them become homeless. Thomas' goal was to locate some of these teens, to hear their stories and to implement programs that may help them.

The pair didn't last the entire week however they managed to call attention to a topic they think deserves attention. For more information on Foster Care in Georgia visit DFCS online.
