Study shows moderate alcohol consumption may boost immune system

Posted: Updated:

Preliminary research suggests drinking alcohol in moderation may enhance your immune system.

The findings released in the journal, Vaccine, showed researchers conducted an experiment on 12 rhesus macaque monkeys. They chose this animal because they have similar immune system to humans.

The monkeys were trained to drink alcohol and then they were given a smallpox vaccination. Next, they were divided into two groups: one with access to alcohol and one with access to sugar water.

When they were first vaccinated, all the monkeys showed similar responses to the vaccine. But after the second shot, the monkeys who had a moderate amount of alcohol in their systems had better immune responses to the vaccine compared to the control group.

While analysts don't encourage taking up drinking to boost your immune system, they do stress a glass of wine a few times a week may provide some health benefits.
