Cyber checkups benefit rural children

VALDOSTA, Ga. -

If your child is sick and needs help to see a specialist but that specialist is four hours away, there may be another solution: a cyber check-up. And the FOX Medical Team's Beth Galvin spoke to a family who does, just that.

It's a problem for thousands of Georgia children who live in rural communities. They need to see specialist but they end up in the car for hours.

That's why Children's Healthcare of Atlanta offers "cyber checkups" – it's a way to see the doctor without making a road trip. It worked for Jaeqvous Bethay and his mother, Kara, they were used to making the long journey to the doctor's office.

This time, as opposed to driving to Atlanta from Valdosta, Bethay and his mother are using the Children's Telemedicine Program. The program was created from children who live in rural Georgia. It works with the help of an on-site nurse, a high definition and a remote doctor.

The program was established in 2009 and last year, they treated 971 children.
