Poll Shows Christie Approval Rating Remains Strong

Posted: Updated:

Governor Chris Christie's approval rating and credibility remain strong despite the scandal over major traffic problems on the George Washington Bridge deliberately created as political payback. That's the finding of a new poll on the governor and the scandal. Governor Christie's approval numbers would be the envy of most elected officials, but they have clearly taken a hit, in the face of recent scandal.

The Quinnipiac Poll shows 55%of New Jerseyans approve of the job Christie's doing. That's good, but its way down from the sky-high 74% approval rating he enjoyed last February.

The revelation that Christie aides and appointees deliberately snarled traffic leading from Fort Lee to the George Washington bridge, an apparent act of political retribution, is on everyone's mind.

66 % of those asked, believe that claim that he did not order the lane closures but 41% believe he knew what his aides were up to.

Of course, Christie is widely viewed as a front-runner for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination, but 56 % of those surveyed, believe the Bridge scandal will damage or end his White house aspirations.

That number includes a majority of self-described independent voters, who have long been Christie backers. On Thursday, the state assembly will formally create the super-committee that will investigate "bridgegate."

A special counsel has been named. Reid Schar is the man who put former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich behind bars.

52 % of those questioned by Quinnipiac believe democratic law makers ers are conducting legitimate probes that this isn't just a witch hunt.
