Fulton Commissioners pledge to address leaky office

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

FOX 5 has learned that Fulton County officials rejected a funding request to fix leaks in a government building.

Employees in that building – a purchasing department office -- say they are getting sick from water-related issues and possibly mold. County workers began moving employees out of that office on Thursday.

The workers' union leader, Greg Fann, toured the office with facilities manager David Ricks.

"Employees should not have to work in these conditions. They have been subject to these conditions and we are glad to get them out of here," Fann said.

Ricks admits the problems have gone on in the building for more than two years. He said he tried to bring the issues to the attention of the Fulton County Board of Commissioners.  His request for $1 million to start a building overhaul was rejected by the commissioner.

According to Fulton County Commissioner Liz Hausmann, who voted for the measure, those funds instead went to a sidewalk project.

"I find it totally unacceptable we are asking employees to work under those conditions," Hausmann said.  "I think we owe them an apology. I think we owe the public an apology to have them come in and be exposed to that sort of environment."

Commissioner Rob Pitts said lawmakers didn't understand the urgency when the issue came up last October.

"We have employees who are suffering, employees who are leaving work," Pitts said. "If that had been told to the board by the manager or others, we would have put the money in place that day. "

Fulton County Board of Commissioners Chairman John Eaves said the issue now a priority and promised it would be on the agenda in 2014.
