NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s dedication to serving others inspired dozens of volunteers on Staten Island on Saturday.

They gave their time and muscle to help several people who are still trying to rebuild nearly 15 months after Superstorm Sandy.

More than 80 volunteers suited up in the spirit of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

The New York City Church of Christ, joined with Yellow Boots and Hope Worldwide for the day of service.

One of the volunteers, Nicole Nobles feels inspired by the late civil rights leader. “Dr. King talks a lot about resiliency” she said. “Bouncing back from a very serious situation.”

Some homes needed boards while others required insulation.

Another volunteer John Beene says it’s going to take a lot for these people to get back to normal after Sandy devastated the area.

“These are people living in 3rd world squalor” he said. “ Still going on right here in Staten Island."

Many of the homeowners say in the 15 months since Sandy they’ve been simply overwhelmed, unable to do the work without these volunteers.

The volunteers won't be able to finish their work but the assistance goes a long way, because there's still so much left to do.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is holding its monthly board meeting, two days after it heard from a panel on what it needs to do to improve its accountability and efficiency and restore public trust.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey could rescind a $1-a-year lease for a park-and-ride lot near the Lincoln Tunnel. The agency's chief of real estate and development told a committee Wednesday that it should change a deal made in 2012. Published reports have alleged that former Port Authority chairman David Samson voted to approve the lease even though his law firm did business with New Jersey Transit, which operates the park-and-ride lot.
