Alarming number of kids overdosing on cough medicines

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

There's been an alarming rise in the number of children under 5 overdosing on liquid cough and cold medicine. But now there's a new proposal to keep kids safe.

It's an urgent issue with flu cases up 35% last week alone, and parents turning to liquid cold, cough and flu medications to make their children feel better at the height of the season.

But these medicinal syrups are also responsible for 10,000 overdoses each year, according to pediatricians and consumer safety experts it's a rise of 32% over the last decade.

Medical experts and a consumer advocate from Pro Publica joined Sen. Charles Schumer in calling for flow restrictor caps on children' s liquid medications, so that the contents can't be emptied all at once.

They say 20 children a year die from overdoses, and one death is one too many.

The plastic flow restrictor tops would add less than 10 cents to the price of each bottle.

This new safety device could be on store shelves within a year if federal consumer officials mandate it.

If they don't, Sen. Schumer says he won't hesitate to push for legislation.

Is she or isn't she? How about her? Her? Him? (Looks it.) She definitely is. (I think.) Have you ever see a woman coming down the street and want to ask "Are you pregnant?" We human beings are curious creatures. It turns out even some 4-year-olds want to know. Justin Otero is now banned for life from the Doughnut Inn in Monroe, Connecticut. It was a harsh price to pay, some say, for such a seemingly innocent mistake.
