Travel agencies, therapists see business boom during winter months

(WJBK) -

When the temperatures start to dip work hardly plunges at local travel agencies. Their phones actually start to ring off the hook as people try to book a quick warm weather getaway.

"The first three or four months of the year we probably do 60 to 70 percent of our leisure business," says David Fishman, president of Cadillac Travel.

Some of the most popular trips include Caribbean cruises, short stays in the Mayan Riviera, Florida or Cabo San Lucas.

"A lot of time we have to actually either hire more people, work more hours this time of year. They're actually usually working many more hours than normal," says Fishman.

The sun certainly sells but when it's not around, the lack of sun can make people physically sick. It's called Seasonal affective disorder, or SAD.

"It can increase depression; it can increase anxieties for folks; it can increase body aches throughout the body with the barometric pressure changing as well. So, it can be a very, very serious problem," says Chris Nixon, a clinical therapist for Eastwood Clinics.

Experts say a little exercise can go a long way when it comes to getting rid of those winter woes. Anything to get your heart rate moving can make all the difference if you can't get a temporary change of scenery. Nixon also suggests getting outside in the safe temperatures and enjoy winter activities, such as sledding with kids.
