VENICE (FOX 13) -

A 28-year-old Osprey woman is accused of animal cruelty after police say she killed her dog on purpose.

Shelley Bezanson allegedly strangled 7-year-old female pit bull named "Diamond," and a necropsy determined the dog died a "prolonged, painful and cruel death," according to a police report.

The Venice Police Department initially got the call in November. Investigators said Bezanson had been trying to convince the dog's veterinarian to euthanize Diamond, but they refused to do so on multiple occasions.

The Sarasota Sheriff's Office assisted in the two-month investigation. Bezanson was questioned by detectives and "she readily admitted what she did. Her reasoning was obviously flawed, but she knew what she did was wrong," Wendy Rose, a sheriff's office spokesperson, said.

An arrest affidavit produced more details about what happened.

According to the affidavit, Bezeason claimed she was to be evicted from the Sarasota Bay Mobile Home Park if she didn't get rid of Diamond.

The park's community manager, Shelley Zagaia, said pets are allowed --  just not the size of Diamond.

"We are a community of dog lovers here. There are lot of them in here, but because of insurance reasons they have to be under 17 pounds, and no aggressive breeds," Zagaia said.

According to investigators, Bezanson was insistent that her dog was "sick and old," though those claims never appeared to be true.

When the vet encouraged her to take the dog to the Humane Society, police say Bezanson took matters into her own hands.

In the affidavit, investigators say she turned music up at her home to conceal the incident from neighbors.

She apparently told investigators: "I promised Diamond we would be together until the end, and this was the end."

Bezanson was charged Friday with animal cruelty, and she is being held on $25,000 bond.
