Chasing The Lombardi Trophy

Posted: Updated:
Newark, New Jersey (My9NJ) - The Newark Museum currently houses the original Lombardi Trophy which was awarded to the Green Bay Packers after the very first Super Bowl was played in 1967 where the cheeseheads defeated the Kansas City Chiefs.

The museums Deputy Director Mark Albin discussed how important this piece is to their collection.

“It’s the first piece people want to see when they come in to the museum, they say where’s the Vince Lombardi Trophy,” he said.

The cool thing about the trophy is that it has officially come home. The trophy was originally created in Newark by Tiffany & Co when they used to have factories in New Jersey’s biggest city. Unfortunately, the piece is only staying there temporarily. The Packers usually keep the trophy safely in their Hall of Fame, but due to recent construction Newark Museum is holding on to it for a couple of months.

“The Vince Lombardi Trophy was heading into a crate to go to storage”, Albin confirmed.

That is when the museum approached the Green Bay organization and asked to house it since it was originally made there and it seems symbolic being that the Garden State is hosting its first ever Super Bowl this year.

The Lombardi Trophy is named after one of the best and most successful NFL Coaches Vince Lombardi who won five NFL championships including the first two Super Bowls ever played.

Each year the winner of the NFL Super Bowl takes home a replica of this original art.

The New Jersey bail system is broken and more and more people can’t afford to get out of jail. The New Jersey Supreme Court Committee has recommended historic changes to this money-making machine, prospectively cutting the pretrial defendant population in half and saving taxpayers money. One person currently stuck in the broken system is Aakash Dalal, a former Rutgers student who is being held in Bergen County Jail on $4 million bail for his role in firebombing a synagogue 2 years ago.
