Students hold vigil for beloved teacher at Wilkinson Middle School

(WJBK) -

Cristy Berger taught at Wilkinson Middle School for 18 years and coached athletics. She also grew up in the Madison public school district. The 38-year-old wife and mother of three died Saturday after suffering a massive stroke. Her sudden death has devastated the community. Students asked their superintendent if they could hold a vigil for her.

Tuesday night, students, staff and family gathered to remember her.

"Ms. Berger was an amazing teacher. She was there for anybody who needed her, and she stayed after school 'til 7, 8 o'clock just to help us with our work," says former student Heaven Huskey.

"She put me through middle school and pushed me to do better for myself," says another former student Michelle Magasark.

"My mom was an amazing person and to know that she impacted so many people that they all decided to come to this just means so much to me and my family," says daughter Erika Berger.
