Who’s Lying?

Posted: Updated:
This brewing controversy between Lieutenant Governor Kim Guadagno and Mayor of Hoboken Dawn Zimmer continues.

Zimmer has come out with some very serious allegations against the Christie administration regarding the withholding of Sandy relief funds because of her unwillingness to negotiate on city contracts.

“They’re holding our Sandy funds hostage in order to get the push through and expedite the Rockefeller project,” Zimmer said in a television interview.

Guadagno has responded calling these claims untrue. “Any suggestion that Sandy funds were tied to the approval of any project in New Jersey is completely false,” she said.

Face reading expert Julie Theroux discussed how looking at both women’s body language may suggest who is actually lying.

“It is interesting when I watch the video of the two, what I see with the Mayor is she shows a lot of pressure. She sighs, she heaves her shoulders, her head falls over. With the Lt. Governor a lot of the emotion that she is showing in her interview is real and genuine, whereas the mayor is showing that she’s got a lot of pressure,” she said.

Theroux explains the science behind reading one’s body language and how it can help interpret the true meaning behind what they are saying.

“The science is based on the Paul Ekman body language and facial analysis. When a person is talking they make a micro expression. This is something that will tell whether the person is genuine in what they’re talking about, if telling the truth or lying. There’s two clips in the mayors video. In the first one when she’s talking about the funds and specifically she says, ‘The lieutenant governor pulled me aside and she said essentially, you gotta move forward with the Rockefeller project. This project is really important to the governor. She said she had been with him on Friday night and this was a direct message from the governor.’ So what happens is, the head tilts to the left and she starts to look like she’s ready for battle and then she says, ‘essentially you got to move forward’, so when she’s repeating the conversation she’s using the word essentially, so what this means is they had a conversation, she believes this is what she heard, but this is not really what happened,” Theroux explained.

Regarding Guadagno’s behavior during her interview, Theroux is convinced she is the one telling the truth.

“She shows genuine emotion. When she says ‘all the facts are examined’ she purses her lip and shows true contempt when she says that. She also shows a real passive stance when she’s talking about any suggestion that Sandy funds were tied to the project,” she said.

On the other hand, Republican political strategist Rick Shaftan, doesn’t understand why someone who is lying would go to the extremes to tell their side so publicly.

“I’m not going to say who is lying, but it’s a stretch to say that someone is going to make up a story, repeat it on national TV then go to the U.S. Attorney’s office apparently without legal counsel and talk for four hours,” he said.
