PHOENIXVILLE, Pa. -

A firefighter in Chester County is hospitalized in stable condition after suffering a heart attack while battling a house fire early Thursday, officials say.

According to a news release from the Phoenixville Fire Dept., the firefighter collapsed at the scene of a reported chimney fire on the 900 block of Township Line Road to which crews were called at 1:03 a.m.

Deputy Chief David J. Meadows says the 64-year-old firefighter, who is not being identified at this time, went into sudden cardiac arrest while in the house.

Other firefighters who were in the same room took him to another room, where they began to evaluate him and perform CPR.

The firefighter also received two shocks from an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) and was conscious before the ambulance arrived to take him to Phoenixville Hospital.

No other injuries were reported.
