$80,000 backhoe missing from Atlanta's water department

ATLANTA -

An $80,000 piece of equipment is missing and believed to have been stolen from Atlanta's water department.

Atlanta City Councilmember Felicia Moore is calling for an audit of water department security after several reports of recent thefts.

Millions of dollars spend on security hasn't prevented the theft of thousands of dollars of equipment, including an expensive backhoe that recently disappeared. The department did not report the loss of the $80,000 piece of equipment to police, sources tell FOX 5.

Back on Jan. 6, the backhoe was delivered to a private company for a headlight. City employees could not find the backhoe when they went to pick it up.

The cost of stolen item could exceed $1 million.

Department of Watershed Commissioner Joanne Macrina told FOX 5's Morse Diggs that she supports Moore's idea of an independent audit of the department.
