(WJBK) -

Detroit Police Officer Billie Peters has seen his fair share of crime. But last week when he responded to a call at a house on the city's northwest side, he says something felt different to him.

"All the cases stick out to me but this one here hit a little more close to home," he says.

Mia Owens pulled into her driveway about 5:45 a.m. January 16. She saw her front door was open and knew something was wrong. When Officer Peters arrived at her home he discovered their house had been robbed. Among the items taken were a locked box of Mia's personal items and all of her young son Kamari's prized possessions: his DVD player, a Nintendo DS and his Wii system - everything the single mom worked tirelessly to provide for her second grader.

"You are trying to put a roof over his head and, you know, get what he wants on top of his needs, and give him safety. It's hard," Mia says.

Fortunately, Kamari was staying at a relative's while she was working the night shift.

"The part that bothered me the most was, here's these individuals standing inside in this little boy's room, and you can tell for sure that it's a little boy's room. They just totally disregarded this little child and took his belongings," says Officer Peters.

Officer Peters wrapped up his investigation but this case was not over for him.

Officer Peters posted on his Facebook page:

I have 294 friends on [Facebook]. I am asking everyone of you for $3.00 will you all help. I understand we can not save the world, but it would make one 7 year old little boy very happy. I have tried contacting different place to help, I don't know if all you can. Some say let it go, But for some reason I just can't. Just incase [you're] wondering, for what. This little boy lost his Nintendo DS, Wii game console / controls, and a DVD player, to the B/E guy last week !!!! Unless any body's got any ideas, scratching my head !!!!"

"We care about the citizens. I mean, it's not all bad," Officer Peters says.

"Just, putting forth effort to get it back, is doing a lot for me and my child," says Mia.

If you are interested in making a donation Officer Peters asks that you email him at Peters3148@yahoo.com, or to search for him on Facebook under "Billie Peters."
