Bucks County Psychiatrist Charged With Fondling 3 Patients

Posted: Updated:
DOYLESTOWN, Pa. -

A Bucks County psychiatrist is accused of inappropriate sexual contact with some of his patients. Police arrested Dr. Basem Shlewiet late Thursday afternoon.

He's facing nearly a dozen charges.

Police said Dr. Shlewiet groped three female patients, two of them minors, from April to December of last year.

A parent of one of his patients said these allegations are hard to believe.

"We just cannot believe this has happened to him," said the woman whose identity we're protecting.

She was waiting with her family to see Dr. Shlewiet when we told her he probably wouldn't show.

According to Court documents, the psychiatrist is accused of fondling the breasts of a then 22-year-old patient while checking her heart rate during a session. She told investigators she thought he was going to kiss her.

"He is an excellent doctor, he's helped our family out exclusively. I am just in shock right now," the anonymous parent said.

In November, court records say the 42-year-old doctor inappropriately touched a 17-year-old after asking to check her blood pressure.

That same month, court documents show a 14-year-old victim told detectives Dr. Shleweit asked her how often she had sex during an appointment.

The affidavit states he also asked to check her blood pressure, and then touched her inappropriately. The criminal complaint also says the teen's father told police that the doctor told his daughter in a creepy tone while winking, "what happens in my office, stays in my office."

"We have some problems and he's always been there for us and I'm very upset at this point," the anonymous parent said.

Shlewiet faces two counts of unlawful conduct with a minor, two counts of corruption of a minor and seven counts of indecent assault.

The woman who has taken her children to see him for the past year, says she has always been in the room during the therapy sessions.

"It would be concerning to any adult, but I have never witnessed anything like that," she said.

Shlewiet is being held on a $250,000 bond at the Bucks County Correctional Facility.

If he bonds out, a judge ordered he's not allowed to come to his office, practice psychiatry, be around minors and has to surrender his passport.
