Northern Liberties Community Fighting Back After Tragic Death

Posted: Updated:
Northern Liberties -

Visitation was held Saturday at a Maryland funeral home for a Philadelphia woman killed during a mugging last weekend.

Philadelphia police continue to search for Amber Long's killers, after she was shot Sunday on Front Street as she walked with her mother.

Meanwhile women in the area are fighting back.

Community members hosted a self-defense class for woman, teaching them how to recognize danger and protect themselves.

They're hoping they can prevent another tragedy like the one that unfolded last weekend.

"Your opponent is bigger, stronger and faster than you are," instructor Phil Migliarese said.

Around two dozen women gathered in Northern Liberties to prepare for the worst.

"Living in a city, it pays to be smart aware and take any step that you can to feel like you have an element of control to your surroundings," Kelly Gerson said.

It's that neighborhood where Amber Long was murdered in front of her mother over a 14 dollar purse.

A Gracie Jiu-jitsu black belt, Migliarese taught this self -defense class to try and prevent a tragedy like that from happening again.

For him it's also personal.

"You know I couldn't sleep over it. I live in the neighborhood and it's important to me too. My girlfriend is here in the city and it's very, very important for me to reach the women of Philadelphia and do what I can to help," he said.

Migliarese said staying off your phone so you're aware of your surroundings and making eye contact with people you pass are important tips.

He also instructed the women on physical techniques in case things get out of hand.

"Get down to base, get down to base. Be difficult," he said while demonstrating.

Kelly Moorehead and her friends came to the session because they want to be prepared.

"We are a little bit naive when it comes to the city and the things that we sometimes do, so we thought it was the best idea to come here and kind of get informed," she said.

Others say they attended because of the recent tragedy.

Jennifer Francisco thinks what she learned will come in handy.

"Just a feeling of empowerment. In an event that, God forbid, anything were to happen, I would at least feel confident that I could run away safely," she said.

Reward money to catch Long's killer has reached 37 thousand dollars.

Anyone with information should contact police.
