New Lenox firetruck damaged in crash

NEW LENOX, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A New Lenox Fire Protection District truck sustained minor damage when a car slid into it Saturday on Cedar Road, the SouthtownStar is reporting.

It was one of several accidents Saturday along the stretch of Cedar from U.S. 30 to U.S. 52 between New Lenox and Manhattan. High winds caused white-out conditions in many spots, forcing cars into ditches.

No one was hurt when Sara Sherman's silver Honda sedan was headed south on Cedar by the American Legion Hall in New Lenox and hit the fire truck. The fire truck was returning from a call when it turned around in the legion's parking lot. It was turning north onto Cedar from Ford Drive when Sherman said she hit ice and slid.

"I was coming in (to the nearby auto body shop) for this (existing dent) and I hit the fire truck, and it was a sheet of ice," Sherman said as she pointed to a smaller dent in her car.

Sherman's car had heavy damage to the front driver's side corner as a result of the accident.

Battalion Chief Josh Swanson said the engine's damage was minor. It appeared the silver metal step immediately behind the engine's cab was dented, but none of the controls above that area seemed to be affected.

About a mile south from the collision, at least three other vehicles needed to be pulled from the ditch Saturday morning. Along the same stretch of Cedar Road between Laraway and Smith Roads, high winds from the southwest blew across open fields, creating dangerous conditions.

This area of Cedar Road is a two-lane rural highway with soft shoulders and deep ditches.
