What to do if you're caught in a rip current

A warning if you're hitting the beach this summer -- rip currents could be a problem. Rip currents can carry away even strong swimmers, so don't take chances when red flags are up and/or life guards aren't on duty. Rip currents are powerful, channeled currents of water flowing away from shore. They typically extend from the shoreline, through the surf zone, and past the line of breaking waves. Rip currents can occur at any beach with breaking waves, including the Great Lakes.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Several dozen schools from western New York to the North Country are closed or delaying the start of classes as the region is blasted by another round of snow and high winds.

WBEN-AM in Buffalo is reporting that winds gusting to nearly 40 mph are causing whiteout conditions in some areas during the Monday morning commute.

Most of the school closings and two-hour delays are in the Buffalo area, but others are reported in Chautauqua, Genesee, Niagara, Livingston, Orleans and Wyoming counties. In northern New York, the weather has delayed the start of classes in Jefferson, St. Lawrence, Oswego and Lewis counties.

The National Weather Service has issued a wind chill warning for most of western New York until late Tuesday morning.
