Congressman Grimm threatens NY1 reporter

Congressman Michael Grimm (R-NY) physically threatened a reporter at the Capitol after President Barack Obama's State of the Union address.

The confrontation began Tuesday when Michael Scotto, a reporter for cable news station NY1, asked Grimm about a Justice Department investigation into his campaign finances.

After cutting the interview short, Grimm told Scotto, "You ever do that to me again I'll throw you off this (expletive) balcony." He also threatened to "break (Scotto) in half."

NY1 posted video of the incident on its website.

"What you see on tape is exactly what happened, said Michael Scotto, cousin of Good Day NY anchor Rosanna Scotto, during the morning show.

Grimm initially defended his actions, but by late Wednesday morning had issued a statement apologizing.

"I was wrong. I shouldn't have allowed my emotions to get the better of me and lose my cool. I have apologized to Michael Scotto, which he graciously accepted, and will be scheduling a lunch soon. In the weeks and months ahead I'll be working hard for my constituents on issues like flood insurance that is so desperately needed in my district post Sandy," said Grimm

Scotto took to Twitter to say he had accepted Grimm's apology.

Soon after the confrontation on Tuesday night, Grimm said he was "extremely annoyed" with Scotto and doubted he was the "first member of Congress to tell off a reporter."

"I think I felt a little startled that he was saying what he was saying. I don’t think I was scared. I’m used to people getting angry when they don’t like the question. There were no ground rules I checked with my producer who set up the interview and I went through the emails.  When I saw him last night there were no ground rules set.  He knew this was a taped segment… I was surprised he came back and knew that the camera was on," said Scotto.

NY1 political director Bob Hardt demanded a "full apology" from Grimm.
