Detroit Water and Sewerage Dept. cutting several hundred jobs

Posted: Updated:
(WJBK) -

An official with the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department says about 600 non-union workers will receive notices of new job qualifications which have to be met within 30 days. The notice is expected to come no later than Friday. The same is to happen for another hundred union employees within in the next few weeks.

Some of the new job qualifications required may include higher education and technical skills.

A water official tells FOX 2 this "optimization plan" is the result of a study conducted back in 2012. He says, along with attrition, which alone would save the department over 12 million dollars, these cuts would likely double that. But the department that serves four million customers now has it's employees on edge.

FOX 2's Erika Erickson spoke with a union employee who says employees attended a meeting in December regarding job title changes but says they were never told about new qualifications for those jobs, and never told those jobs would be on the line.

Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel says he met with Detroit emergency manager Kevyn Orr just days ago regarding a regional authority plan in which Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties would assist financially in exchange to have more say.

Orr's office declined to comment.

Water officials say the downsizing will put the right people in the right jobs and create greater efficiency.
