Old love letters found in attic in Western Mich.

Joshua Mckinny had just a couple reams of insulation left before the project of keeping his house warm in Casanovia would be complete. But the project was soon interrupted when he stumbled upon a very lovely, if you will, discovery.

"I was just scooping it up so I could put the new stuff down and when I did that it was just plop ... What is this? I started looking and I was like, `Honey, come look at what I found, this is kind of cool!'" Mckinney tells Grand Rapids FOX 17 reporter Dave Spencer.

The couple began thumbing through the treasures and saw birthday cards, Valentine's Day cards, even a post card - but none compared to the many love letters wrapped in beautiful ribbon. They also found a 1942 birth certificate belonging to William Kissel, and a 1941 marriage certificate belonging to Edward and Virginia Kissel.

So, the next step for Mckinney was to track down the Kissel family.

They posted to Facebook, and, a mere four hours later, the post grabbed the attention of William's daughter Christine Frien, who lives in Muskegon. She says the discovery had a much deeper message for her.

"With my dad's brother just passing away this weekend, I don't know, I just felt like my dad was trying to talk to me or something," she says.

She brought the letters home and began looking them over with her mother, Shirley Kissel. The majority of the love letters are from 1940 before Edward and Virginia were married.

For Shirley, reading the letters was a chance to get to know her husband's father, who she had only met once before his death.

"I didn't get to know him that much, so these letters, yeah, he was quite a lover I guess!" Shirley says, laughing with Christine.

How the letters ended up at the cottage in Casanovia is still a mystery. Shirley says she was only aware of the couple living in Ludington and then in Muskegon.
