One of the biggest sporting events of the year takes place this Sunday, and it doesn't get started before the coin toss. It turns out, the die for the official Super Bowl coin has been cast right here in Central Florida!
"We're fortunate enough that we make the coin they flip before the Super Bowl," says Michael Kott, president of the Highland Mint in Melbourne. "We've been doing that for 20 years."
The Highland Mint was started in the early 1980s. The 40,000-square-foot building is home to a team of 150 craftsmen and women who work in the field of layout design, sculpting, and die-casting.
"We give the first 150 to the NFL. Serial No. 1 is flipped on the field." says Kott. "We also make 10,000 replicas that are sold throughout the United States.
As far as the winning coin goes, both dies for the Seattle Seahawks and the Denver Broncos have been cast. It just depends on when the clock runs out -- one will be minted and the other the other one will be destroyed.
