Sick Cruise Ship

Posted: Updated:
Bayonne, New Jersey (My9NJ) - The Royal Caribbean cruise ship, Explorer of the Sea, returned to port in Bayonne, New Jersey two days early because nearly 700 passengers got sick onboard the vessel.

Passenger Elaine Weizman talked about the trip that went terribly wrong.

“I was sick for probably about 48 hours, we couldn’t really get through to the infirmary, they started getting swamped,” she said.

Another passenger, Robert Auger, described just how bad the ailment was.

“I’ve had a really bad hangover, and this was ten times worse,” he said.

A spokesperson for Royal Caribbean said that the ship originally had two doctors on board which weren’t enough to properly handle the wave of sick passengers. As a result, when they got to the Virgin Islands they were able to bring on more medical personnel from the CDC to help handle the outbreak.

The company is taking a lot of steps to make sure that the ship is safe and clean to leave for its next voyage on Friday. This is the worst outbreak to happen on a cruise ship in 20 years.

The town of Elmwood Park relies on about 75 to 100 volunteer firefighters for emergencies.  Russell Fenn, IV is one of those volunteer firefighters. He was driving the department’s only ladder truck and crashed it into utility poles.  Police charged Fenn with driving under the influence and said that his blood alcohol level was twice the legal limit.
