Celebrating the Chinese New Year: Happy year of the horse!

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Friday is the Chinese New Year, 4712, the year of the horse. Chicago is celebrating with food, firecrackers and parades. It's a good time to try to increase your luck!

The Year of the Horse is supposed to take off out of the gate, galloping. People partied in Chinatown, reviewing old customs and traditions that bring good luck.

Red is the dominant color on this holiday. Wearing red and decorating with red repels bad spirits. Lucky foods are eaten too. A whole fish means abundance. Long noodles represent longevity. Calligraphers paint poetic expressions wishing peace and prosperity. Everyone is happy, especially the children.

"I remember getting red envelopes from grandparents, filled with money," Vivian Xu told FOX 32 News.

Danny Chan said being with family is the best part of the New Year.

"New Year's greetings! Gung hay fat choy," parade organizer Gene Lee said. "Wishing everyone you see a happy, healthy prosperous lunar new year of the horse."

There are two parades to celebrate the Chinese New Year in Chicago this year. The North Side parade will be on Argyle at 1 p.m. on Saturday. The Chinatown parade will go down Wentworth at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

The New Year is supposed to welcome the arrival of spring. Here in Chicago, that's a wish that might take a long time to come true.
