18 horses killed in Oconee County stable fire

OCONEE COUNTY, Ga. -

Almost twenty horses were killed in a fire at an Oconee County barn on Friday morning.
 
According to the Oconee County Fire Department, the fire started around 1:33 a.m. at the Brookwood Equestrian Center which is located on the 2100 block of Union Church Road. Officials say the barn was fully engulfed in flames by the time they arrived at the scene.

Officials say 18 horses inside the barn perished in the fire. A groundskeeper received burns trying to free the horses.
 
The cause of the fire was ruled accidental. Investigators are looking into if the electrical system in the TACK room caused the fire. Officials say the caused nearly $1 million in damage between the property damage and the loss of the horses.

They say the horses were owned by nine different owners
