Officers Rescue Unconscious Man From A Burning Car

Posted: Updated:

When you see this, nothing but a burned out shell of what used to be a Suburban. It's hard to believe that the driver inside here even made it out alive. But he did, thanks to a pretty amazing rescue.

This police dashcam video tells a harrowing story through the snowfall and wet window

An unconscious driver with his foot on the pedal spins his tires so hard they start to catch on fire. The flames move quickly to the gas tank, all while Officer Jesse Mathwig is banging on the window to try to get him out.

"Officer took a baton and tried to break out a window, but the baton broke," says Garland.

The car burning, he tries again with a flashlight.

"The concern was how much time we have with this gas tank. They just didn't know," says Garland.

"I got it. Sir sir sir, you have to get out of the vehicle now." Garland said to the driver.

But the driver didn't move.

"Get out get out!" He yelled.

The fire department is trying to get to the scene but is literally stuck in gridlock.

"You hear the radio traffic that's telling about the situation. You know it's getting worse and worse and worse and there you are. You are in a big red fire truck stopped." says Anderson.

As fire crews slowly move down the center line, Officer Mathwig and a Hennepin County Deputy pull the man away from the inferno. The adrenaline is rushing as they try to determine if the victim is alive.

"Is he still breathing? " Mathwig asks.

Then signs of life.

"He is breathing, just barely," says Mathwig.

"He told me flat out, ya know if I would have been there a minute later I don't know what would have happened. You could tell in his voice it probably would have been bad for the driver," says Garland.

"I'd say he's pretty lucky," Anderson says.

The victim, 58 year old Douglas Aure was taken to HCMC. He's in critical but stable condition. Karen Scullin, FOX 9 News.
