Ga. Senate resolution backs Brunswick dredging

Posted: Updated:

BRUNSWICK, Ga. (AP) - Georgia's state lawmakers are asking Congress to provide for an annual dredging at the Port of Brunswick.

State Sen. William Ligon has proposed a resolution encouraging Congress to provide funds to remove sediment that can obstruct shipping traffic.

The Times-Union reports that there is only enough federal funding to remove less than 10 percent of the shoaling. Supporters of the port say vessel operators paid $12 million in maintenance fees in 2013 and that it generated $350 million in annual customs.

The resolution has not yet come up for a Senate vote.
