Punxsutawney Phil 'predicts' more winter

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow and 'predicted' six more weeks of winter on Groundhog Day 2014.

Groundhog Day and Super Bowl Sunday fell on the same day for the first time ever but Phil would not make a prediction on the game.

The Punxsutawney Groundhog Club expected about 20,000 revelers to gather around Gobbler's Knob when western Pennsylvania's world-famous rodent emerged from his lair just after dawn Sunday to 'predict' the weather, said executive director Katie Donald.

Legend has it, if Phil sees his shadow, winter will last for six more weeks. However, if cloudy conditions prevent that, then an early spring is forecast.

Phil has now seen his shadow 101 times and hasn't seen it just 17 times, according to the Groundhog Club’s Inner Circle. There are no records from many of the early years.

New York's own 'forecasting' groundhog, Staten Island Chuck, also predicted the brutal winter will continue for six more weeks.

The recent death of a man from Staten Island while he was being arrested by NYPD officers is calling into question a police crackdown on petty offenses to discourage more serious crime. Critics say policing based on the so-called "broken windows" theory can needlessly put people at risk and fuel tensions in the city's minority communities.
