Orange County deputies arrest suspect in shooting near gas station

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -

Orange County sheriff's deputies say they have arrested the man accused of shooting and killing a man near a gas station in broad daylight Sunday afternoon.

OCSO arrested 20-year-old Demitri Burke for the murder or Juan Berrios Monday afternoon.

That shooting happened in the parking lot of a 7-Eleven on Landstar Blvd. near the Osceola County line just after 1 p.m. Sunday. Deputies said the victim was shot inside his car.  He died a short time later at Florida hospital Kissimmee.

Mere hours after his death, Berrios' friends gathered at the spot where he was killed, lighting candles and praying for him.

"I was in shock. I was heartbroken when I found out, and I'm still heart broken," said one friend.

James Correa, another close friend said, "He was a good guy, he didn't deserve this.  He was young, he wasn't even 21."

Orange County Sheriff's deputies said a man shot the 20 year old several times in his car in broad daylight, then took off.

"I heard 'pop, pop, pop' and everyone just started running away," said witness Jonathan Oquendo.

K9s tracked the guy's scent, but lost it. Witnesses told officers, the gunman is a frequent customer at the 7-Eleven, but they don't know his name and are worried he could hurt someone else before he's caught.

"It's somewhat unnerving that you can just be here with your family, or going to the red box or getting a big gulp, and then somebody shoots somebody in broad daylight right in front of the 7-Eleven. That's quite concerning. Obviously, this individual is very dangerous if he's willing to do that in broad daylight with the number of people around," said Cpl. David Nutting

Cops don't have a motive yet for this shooting, and while deputies search the area for the gunman, those who knew Berrios are remembering the friend they lost.

"He was a great guy. He would help anybody that needed his help. I can't process that he's gone or that he had problems with anybody or that anybody had problems with him."

During the K9 search, deputies found a handgun they believe is the murder weapon. They have plenty of witnesses who saw the shooting, and are also reviewing surveillance video from the store.
