Dyckman Street subway station renovations complete

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

In the Inwood section of upper Manhattan, MTA officials and elected officials proudly celebrated the completed renovation of the historic above ground subway station on Dyckman Street.

Built in 1906, the station boasts new walls, floors, ceilings, and new platforms, overhead canopies and tracks after several years of repairs at a cost of $31 million. Best of all, it now has a state-of-the-art glass elevator.

In addition to renovating the Dyckman Street station, the MTA also spent $23 million fixing up stations north of here. Five stations on the No. 1 line had platforms and overhead canopies worked on. Two stations had steel stairs repaired at roughly $4 million for each station. None looked as good as the Dyckman Street station. Dyckman actually made commuters smile.

Officials credited disabled activist for pushing for the Dyckman Street elevator and entrance ramp. But the elevator only services downtown trains. Activists want a ramp entrance on the north side of the station so the disabled would have access to uptown trains. But they add they are willing to be patient since they are so happy to have an elevator.
