Military Flag Controversy

Posted: Updated:
Bordentown, New Jersey (My9NJ) - A controversy surrounding a military flag is dividing the city of Bordentown, N.J.

The "Honor and Remember" flag recognizes all military individuals who have died serving our country dating back to the founding of our nation. The flag serves as a symbol of national gratitude for the many men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

Army SPC Benjamin Moore was killed in Afghanistan in 2011. More than 6,000 people attended his funeral in Bordentown. As a thank you, the Moore family gave out two "Honor and Remember" flags, one to the city of Bordentown and one to be placed at the veterans memorial in the center of town.

Bordentown’s former Mayor Lynch approved the flying of these flags, and while one is flying high above the city, the other one has not been raised.  Bordentown Commissioner Zigmont Targonski discussed the reasoning behind the second flags absence in the town.

"We put it up and the veterans immediately said, 'well that’s not the flag they fought under, they fought under the Stars and Stripes' and that’s the flag they said that they would honor," he explained.

Benjamin’s mother, Amy Moore understands the importance of the stars and stripes and doesn’t want it replaced by the "Honor and Remember" flag she just wants that symbol of sacrifice to also be a part of the memorial.

"My son fought and died under the American flag, there’s no way this flag can ever take that place, it cannot and it never will, it’s to be hung subserviently underneath the American flag," she said.

Current Mayor of Bordentown Joseph R, Malone III chimed in to discuss this controversy.

"There are three very prominent places, three places of honor in our community and I think, we as a city commission and city government has honored the request of the Moores," Malone said.

A tour of the town’s memorial shows gold name plates representing those who died fighting for our freedoms.

"The names that are listed gold were killed in action. This flag represents all of these soldiers, all 44 of these soldiers on this wall that were killed in action, not just Benjamin," Amy Moore says..
