District 5 Commissioner Daisy Lynum to step down, make way for her son

ORLANDO, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -

A big announcement is coming in the Orlando City Council race.

District 5's current commissioner Daisy Lynum is expected to pull out of the race to make way for her son to run.

On Friday, Attorney Juan Lynum announced his intention to run, taking a shot at his mother's current city council seat.

He said she is formally withdrawing from the campaign on Monday.

Juan told Fox 35, it's his turn, saying, "I'm running because I want to continue Commissioner Lynum's legacy of leadership."

The last-minute switch is throwing a curve ball to two other candidates. Council hopeful Regina Hill said this is an example of "nepotism at its best," and this election shouldn't be treated like a "family business."

"I think this race should be a race of merit, not inheritance," Hill added, "This is a democracy and it's the people's seat; they vote. I don't think it's something that you should pass through the family lines, letting it become a family affair."

On Sunday, we tried reaching Daisy Lynum for comment, stopping by her house and calling her several times, but without success.

Juan told us his mother is making sure he qualifies for the seat, before formally withdrawing.

Meanwhile, Hill said, though she's now facing a different Lynum, her reasons for throwing for her hat in the ring haven't changed.

"When I decided to run, I didn't decide to run against Commissioner Lynum. I decided to run for the people," Hill said. "I saw there were so many issues that had not been addressed throughout the years and our community here in District 5 had become stagnant when it came to the people's needs."

The election is on April 8. Juan Lynum will face Hill and Cynthia Harris in the polls.
