City Council President Talks About Proposed Love Park Expansion

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

Mayor Michael Nutter and Council President Darrell Clarke have reached an agreement on the future of Love Park. To talk about the plan for JFK Plaza, City Council President Darrell Clarke was on Good Day.

"We are looking at bringing in some private interest. We have gotten commitments for a number of big players in the city of Philadelphia to help us move ahead on this proposal. We will maintain the park… we will enhance it, bringing in more greens. Right now it is pretty slab," said Clarke.

Clarke says that they will aim to bring in a lot more commercial players, probably cafes. He envisions something York Park in London or Bryant Park in New York where there are people everywhere, even in winter time.

Clarke also wanted a stage in the center too.

"Most of the park is actually slab. It is concrete. We will maintain the fountains. We will maintain the iconic Love Park Statue and what we want to do is break it down to ground level so we have more access. Right now the only activity is pretty much feeding for homeless and some issues we don't agree with," said Clarke.

Clarke also envisions having a parking garage underneath so people can bring in their vehicles, go around Philadelphia and spend some money.

What will guarantee that any of this will even happen? Clarke emphasizes that the plan greatly includes the private sector and a lot of property owners are already to participate in this process.

"If we can pull together a series of funding sources we can really do that," said Clarke.

Expect this plan to take about a year and a half. Watch the whole segment above.
