DETROIT (WJBK) -

More than 20 Detroit Public Schools are closing Tuesday after a major outage of electrical service from the Detroit Public Lighting Department.

Four substations experienced failure and it's not known when the power will return. Teachers stayed at their schools until all students were released to their parents.

"We had a major cable failure up in northwest Detroit and it unfortunately resulted in a cascading situation where we had numerous outages in the vicinity," says Beau Taylor, Interim Director of the Public Lighting Department. "You have police stations; you have fire houses; you have traffic signals, crosswalks and street lighting; so, it's all infrastructure that is on the Public Lighting Department's utility grid."

He says some of the cables are 60 years old.

As repairs are being made, FOX 2's Amy Lange reports plans are in place to prevent another lighting outage.

"We have to build some more redundancy in the system. We do have a team of experts that we recently brought in, so we're fairly confident that we have the situation under control  and we have a longer term plan so this won't be an issue that's ongoing in the distant future."

DTE Energy is coming on board over the summer and additional improvements to this aging infrastructure are expected.
