Do gadgets lead to distracted parenting?

Posted: Updated:

Distracted driving, distracted walking, and now distracted parenting. As our eyes continue to gaze downwards toward our phones and other electronic devices, we look less at our children, who pay the price.

Adam Cohen, a proud father of 1-year-old Harper and 5-year-old Mark, admits the temptation of technology sometimes distracts him while he's watching his kids. It seems emailing and texting can so easily pull parents attention away.

Andrea Miller is mom to 5-year-old Scarlet says she does find herself looking at her phone.

Jennifer Berkowitz, mother to 3-year-old Ryan, says she has left the room and her son calls out to her that she forgot her phone.

Some new moms met for an event sponsored by the group Big City Moms. One thing not on the agenda but maybe it should have been was the dangers of distracted parenting, especially to kids under 5.

CDC research shows for the first time since the 1970s nonfatal injuries to kids under 5 are on the rise. It comes at the same time the number of us who own smart phones and other devices are steadily increasing.

Dr. Greg Yapalater, a pediatrician, says he sees distracted parents in his office all the time. He says parents need to be vigilant because a child can get into trouble in a fraction of a second.

Of course there is an easy solution to all this, although it's hard to do: turn off your phone when you're watching your kids.
