Attorney: Jayru Campbell is extremely remorseful

Cass Tech quarterback Jayru Campbell was arraigned Wednesday on charges stemming from the assault of a high school security guard last month.

Campbell, who appeared through a video feed and wearing his varsity jacket, was charged with assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder and aggravated assault.

FOX 2's Erika Erickson reports Campbell's attorney and coach do not agree with the charges, and say they are too harsh.

"Jayru Campbell, the circumstances that this case involves, he should not be criminalized," says Jeffrey Edison, Campbell's attorney.

Campbell's coach tells Erickson he hopes people can understand that Campbell is still a young man with a bright future.

"He is extremely remorseful for whatever took place. So, but he's ready to move forward," says Edison.

Video posted online claims to show Campbell body slamming the security guard as school let out on Jan. 22. A number of students captured the incident on cell phone cameras.

If those videos will be allowed as evidence is undetermined at this time. Both sides agree the video does not show everything, such as the moments leading up to the video, or if the person in the video is even Campbell.

A preliminary hearing for Campbell is scheduled for 9 a.m. on Feb. 24.
