Snow Falls Hard In Pennsylvania; Crews Use Temporary Lull To Clean Up

Posted: Updated:

More than 14 inches have fallen in some areas of the Delaware Valley. Traffic is snarled, crews are battling the relentless snow and FOX 29 has all the coverage for you to stay home. Snow will continue to fall, changing over to rain in some areas, but changing back again to snow by the evening.

CHECK: Traffic Delays and accidents

Dawn Timmeney was in Downingtown, PA starting in the wee hours of the morning when it was snowing hard. No matter how many time the plows came through, the snow quickly covered the roads again, Dawn was standing ankle deep in roads that had already been plowed many times.

"This is a perfect day to snuggle up at home and watch Good Day," she said. Downingtown expects double digit accumulations.

Dawn went to Exton, Pa. in the 8 a.m. hour and she talked to a man who owns a landscaping company. He had been plowing the roads the whole morning. The snow is really hard to move because of the wetness. He also tells people to stay home if they can. At 9 a.m. snow was beginning to change over to sleet. Dawn ran into two people who were trekking through almost a feet of snow. "For some sheltzer water and fresh air," they said. They've been sitting at home in front of the fire place and watching movies. Today's definitely one of those days.

Steve Keeley was in Quakertown in Bucks County, PA during the morning hours. Snow continues to reduce visibility as it falls hard.

The leftover ice from previous storms are still on the sidewalks and curbs and pose a hidden danger as they are freshly covered with snow. Just down the road from Keeley a woman in a BMW was victim to one of those accidents. Her car turned and hit one of those icy embankments and now she's waiting on a tow truck as her front end is completely smashed. It was still stuck on the plowed pile of ice at 8:18 when Keeley reported from there again. The plow trucks are also parked in the middle of parking lots and roads to prevent themselves from being stuck too. Conditions are just deteriorating.

In a touching moment during the 6 a.m. hour, a couple with Love as their last name came to Keeley and gave him some coffee. They told Keeley that they were going to the nearby hospital to see if the staff needed any help getting out of their cars or transporting patients.

"Well, you're living up to your name," Keeley said. He told those two wonderful people to bring all their food to the hospital.

Later, Keeley talked to officials from the Quakertown Borough, and they emphasized to everyone to stay away from snow removal equipment. Give crews room and space to plow the snow, they told Keeley. Keeley also talked to a resident who had to drive to work today, though he had his four-wheel drive vehicle, he told Keeley that he might just want to eat his breakfast at the diner and drive straight home.

By 10 a.m., Keeley passed the mic to Schrat. Schrat and his photographer took a treacherous drive to get to where Keeley was. They witnessed multiple accidents along the way. By 10:30 a.m., conditions were still treacherous. Plow trains continue to go around, but the snow is falling so quickly that the snow keeps re-covering the roads.

Schrat went to Coopersville Borough at noon. He was near a road with a slight incline that was getting tractor trailers stuck. Schrat told FOX 29 that it took some private plows to clear the road before the tractors could get some traction and get on there way. More than a foot of snow has definitely fallen, Schrat estimates.

Karen Hepp reported from South Philadelphia, it's hard to figure out where the sidewalk ends and the roads begin. A lot of people will be walking on the street because most sidewalks have not been cleared and have up to 8-10 inches of snow. "Pretty wicked gusts" are also sweeping snow everywhere. Karen said. At around noon, Karen was in Northeast Philadelphia. Despite the snow, some people were digging out already. Karen talked to two guys who were getting some cash helping people dig out. They were charging five to ten buck. Karen also got a rose from a passerby.

Chris Murphy reported from Lower Merion at the 9 o'clock hour. Normally, at this time, the roads are packed, but only plows are on the roads now. So much snow had fallen that snow almost went to Murphy's knee, which prompted Sheinelle to joke that the snow would get to her waist or even her shoulders.

Jeff Cole was in Malvern, PA at noon, and with the lull in the storm, crews have cleaned most of the major roads. However, who knows how much will fall tonight.

Snow was coming down at 3-4 inches an hour in many areas during the morning hours, so be careful today if you do go out! Roads will definitely be very spotty as crews work hard to clear a lot of snow accumulation.

PHL's Victoria Lupica talked Good Day. There are about 600 cancellations, but still some flights are going out. Definitely check the PHL website for delays.
