DETROIT (WJBK) -- He once put killers behind bars, but now the former head of the Detroit Police Homicide Unit will spend the next 2-20 years in prison.

Judge Gregory Bill on Tuesday sentenced William Rice for two counts of perjury and one count of conducting a criminal enterprise.

Prosecutors say Rice gave false testimony during a 2009 appellate court proceeding for Davontae Sanford.  Sanford, a developmentally challenged child, was 14 when he was charged as an adult and later convicted of a quadruple homicide in 2007.

Prosecutors say Rice cooked up a phony alibi for Sanford saying the two were together when the fatal shots were fired.

Co-defendant Cheryl Sanford, who is Davontae's great aunt, pleaded guilty to one count of conducting a criminal enterprise. She was sentence to one year in jail.
