4 suburban airports to share $7M for construction projects

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Four suburban airports will share more than $7 million in state money for construction projects, Gov. Pat Quinn announced Thursday.

The state funds for the projects, which total $7,034,000, come from the $31 billion Illinois Jobs Now! program, according to a statement from the governor's office.

Wheeling's Chicago Executive Airport will receive the largest share of the money, $5.36 million for installation of an engineered material arresting system, a large area of specially engineered crushable concrete at the end of a runway to slow or stop planes that overrun the runway.

"I'm happy to see the state invest in Chicagoland's third busiest airport," State Sen. Julie Morrison of Deerfield said. "A small suburban airport like Palwaukee provides local employers a convenient means of transportation, helping them attract top talent and do business all over the country."

The Lake in the Hills Airport in McHenry County will receive $664,000 for construction of an aircraft parking area and a new fuel facility, the statement said.

The Lewis University Airport in Romeoville will receive $609,000 for a project that includes rehabilitation of the airport entrance road.

And the Waukegan Regional Airport will get $461,000 to install a new perimeter fence.

"Investments in airports ... make them safer and more efficient," Quinn said in the statement. "The projects will also employ a number of construction workers, which will drive local economy forward."

Construction on all four projects is expected to begin in May.
