Do We Have The Death Penalty or Not?

Posted: Updated:

California has the death penalty. One of almost three dozen states that do. However, you could also say California doesn't have the death penalty, as we have 731 inmates on death row and haven't executed anyone since 2006 because of legal issues over the lethal combination of drugs used to inject the condemned.

As a result, if you're pro death penalty, like Phyllis Loya whose police officer son was gunned down on the job in 05, or football great Kermit Washington who's been waiting for justice for 30 years he says since his family was brutally murdered by a gang banger AT THE WRONG ADDRESS, our death penalty is a farce and they want it to actually be used. On the other hand, death penalty opponents like those with the group Death Penalty Focus  say the system is hopelessly broken, costly, unfair, and beyond fixing… let alone the moral issues.

Into that comes a group of former California Governors, the DA of San Bernardino County Mike Ramos, and former LA County DA Steve Cooley, with a high profile press conference today announcing ‘'death penalty reform'', an initiative they hope to qualify for the ballot this November,  which  would speed up the process, toughen non-existent oversight, cut costs by making death row inmates actually share cells even put em to work.  So get ready for another bruising public campaign over the death penalty. Proponents say Californians really want it, as evidenced by the defeat of Prop 34 two years ago, which would ‘ve abolished it in this state… but, uh, it was defeated 53 % to 47 % not exactly a one sided debate.
