Former Hindu temple leader charged with fraud

Posted: Updated:

ATLANTA (AP) - Federal prosecutors say the former leader of a Hindu temple in Georgia defrauded his followers and the temple's creditors.

Annamalai Annamalai, of Baytown, Texas, faces 32 counts of fraud and obstruction-related charges.

Prosecutors say Annamalai charged followers for providing spiritual guidance or other services and then submitted false documents to their credit card companies to get more money.

He's also accused of concealing assets from the temple's creditors when it sought bankruptcy protection. And he's accused of falsifying an email to an IRS agent and submitting false statements to a grand jury and a bankruptcy court.

Annamalai was arrested in November and remains in custody. It wasn't immediately clear whether he has a lawyer.

Annamalai is also known as Dr. Commander Selvam and Swamiji Sri Selvam Siddhar.
